BROTHER WES MENDES STRIKES OUT 12 AS 'NOLES TOP DUKE, 3-1
Tallahassee — No. 10 Florida State baseball (20-5, 6-1 ACC) opened its series against Duke (17-11, 4-6 ACC) with a 3-1 win on Friday night at Dick Howser Stadium. Brother WES MENDES led the way for the Seminoles, tying a personal best by striking out 12 of the 23 Blue Devil batters he faced. It was Mendes’ third double-digit strikeout performance of the season. The dynamic southpaw threw 104 pitches over 6.2 scoreless innings, giving up just four hits and one walk en route to his sixth victory in seven starts.
In his seven starts, Mendes has pitched a total of 40.2 innings, Mendes has struck out 58 batters while walking only 11, compiling a stellar 1.33 ERA.
The Tampa Jesuit alum received a standing ovation as he exited the game late in the 7th inning, handing the ball off to his former high school teammate and fellow Pike brother JOHN ABRAHAM (#19), who followed Mendes’ lead by quickly closing out the inning with a strike out. Abraham gave up one run on two hits in the eighth inning, but rebounded quickly by striking out three more batters over the final two innings to earn his third Save of the season.
